Early years[ | ]

Friedrich Müller was born on April 2, 1867 in Königsberg (Prussia). His father was a German from Prussia, and his mother was Russian, but they themselves professed Lutheranism. As a child, he was weak and sickly. As a student, he became interested in anatomy and physical education, which helped him significantly develop his muscles[3].

Path to glory[ | ]

Soon Friedrich became a circus athlete and chose a new name for himself - Evgeniy Sandov

(English pronunciation -
Eugene Sandow
). In addition to demonstrating strength tricks and the beauty of his muscles, he also practiced wrestling, gaining the reputation of being invincible.

Sandow gradually abandoned wrestling, which became uninteresting to him. He focused on strength training and promoting his system of physical exercises.

Career in America[ | ]

After a successful tour of European countries, Eugene went to America in 1894. There he was advertised as “the strongest man in the world”[4].

Sandow showed remarkable talent as a businessman. Sandow advertised his method of developing strength and the sports equipment necessary for this, a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet. Thanks to him, sales of weights, dumbbells, barbells and books about bodybuilding increased significantly.

Moving to England[ | ]

In 1897, Sandow moved to England, where he continued performing and promoting his numerous techniques. He created institutes of physical education, as well as salons and studios of physical education - prototypes of gyms. In 1901, Sandow held the world's first athletic beauty contest in England with the support of the royal family.[4] By that time, he had finally completed his wrestling career and devoted himself entirely to promoting his methods and demonstrating power moves. In 1911, King George V awarded Eugen Sandow the title of Professor of Physical Development[4].

Personal life[ | ]

He was married to Blanche Brooks, with whom his relationship subsequently deteriorated. In this marriage, Eugene had two daughters[5].

Death[ | ]

Evgeniy Sandov died on October 14, 1925 in London from a cerebral hemorrhage. There is a version that this happened after he pulled his car out of the ditch with one hand[4]. Sandow is buried in London at Putney Vale Cemetery

. His wife buried him in an inconspicuous grave without a headstone[5].

The emergence and development of athleticism. Part No. 2

Danton, Stehr, Gessler, Sir – unsurpassed champions of the 19th century!

One can treat with respect, albeit with some skepticism, the fantastic achievements of athletes shown in the distant past:
For example, in 1891, the Englishman Danton pressed a 34-kilogram barbell with both hands 845 times!!! Stehr (Austria) in 1897 - 50 kg weight 25 times. In 1912, Gessler (Germany) lay down and stood up with a bag weighing 250 kg (the bag was filled with metal), Sir (Canada) in 1892, with his right hand, lifted a spherical barbell weighing 440 kg to knee level!

Since 1901, in the States, Canada, Britain, France, Belgium, Germany and other numerous countries, grandiose, international competitions and competitions have been organized for the strongest athletes, at which they (both men and women) demonstrated their absolute strength capabilities, beauty and harmony of the figure. Often competitions were held to music in the presence of spectators. The winners were solemnly awarded with cash prizes and medals and, as a rule, the final crown of such championships was a beauty contest for male athletic build.

World famous Eugene Sandow

A significant contribution to the development and popularization of athleticism was made by our fellow countryman, the legendary compatriot Evgeniy Sandov (also known as Eugene Sandow), who at the end of the century before last voiced a hypothesis about the real practical possibility of correcting figure defects and physique defects.

Evgeniy Sandov training

He was practically and theoretically able to substantiate the main ways of forming a harmonious athletic figure with the help of exercises with weights, publishing in 1903 in England his printed bestseller with the euphonious title “Bodybuilding” (building the body), setting out the established principles that, decades later, laid a solid foundation for modern bodybuilding. And the immediate origin of modern bodybuilding dates back to the period between the world wars, its widespread use - to the first post-war years... Evgeniy Sandov composed his training mainly from a basic set of 18 exercises with dumbbells, used on the principle of gradually increasing loads. Working according to this system, the athlete achieved outstanding achievements for his time, becoming the owner of an excellent athletic figure: a) height 174 cm, b) body weight 90 kg, c) neck volume 44 cm, d) chest 122 cm, e) waist 80 cm , f) pelvis 107 cm, g) hips 66 cm, h) lower legs 44 cm, i) arms (biceps in tension) 44 cm.

Without detracting from the merits of this great athlete, for comparison we present some anthropometric data of the modern thirty-year-old Belarusian hero Nikolai Grishanov: a) height 177 cm, b) weight 100 kg, c) chest volume 135 cm, d) waist 78 cm, e) hips 73 cm , f) shins 45 cm, g) biceps 52 cm. With such powerful muscle mass, the athlete is able to do pull-ups on the bar with a wide grip 60 times and bench press 200 kg!

Achievements of Evgeniy Sandov[ | ]

Evgeniy had phenomenal strength[3]. For example:

  • Over the course of four minutes, he did 200 push-ups.
  • For several seconds, he held weights of 27 kilograms each on his outstretched arms.
  • Leaning his heels on one chair and the back of his head on another, he held two people on his chest and a 22-kilogram weight in his outstretched hand.
  • Holding a 24-kilogram weight in each hand, he stood on a handkerchief, then jumped and did a backflip, landing exactly there.
  • A platform was placed on his chest, and he held three horses on it. In another room, there was a piano and an eight-piece orchestra on the platform.
  • In 1894, he set a world record by squeezing with one hand a barbell with huge hollow balls, each with one person inside. The weight of the unusual barbell was 122 kilograms.
  • While on tour in San Francisco in 1894, Sandow fought a lion that was muzzled and wearing mittens. The lion rushed at Sandow, and he caught him, held him and threw him away.
  • In 1895, Sandow performed a very difficult strength trick: he lifted and squeezed a barbell weighing 115 kilograms with his right hand and, transferring it to his left hand, squatted down and lay on his back, then, without lowering the barbell, stood up.

Evgeniy Sandov

“The Father of Bodybuilding” and the strongest man in the world of the 20th century, Evgeniy Sandov, is a cult personality that every self-respecting bodybuilder knows. Eugene Sandow, as he is called in the Western style, has never resorted to the help of any drugs or supplements that stimulate muscle growth.

It was he who introduced the broad masses to the concepts of a healthy lifestyle, body culture, proper nutrition, and became an example to follow. Sandow showed others that absolutely anyone can look good and be strong.

The main thing is to constantly train and adhere to an exclusively healthy and wholesome diet.

Eugene not only actively promoted a healthy active lifestyle, but also developed his own gymnastics for athletes. He described his system in the books “Strength and How to Gain It”, “Sandow Physical Training System”.

Biography

The future idol of athletes around the world was born in Konigsberg (Kaliningrad) in 1867. His real name is Friedrich Wilhelm Müller. As a child, the boy was not in good health, but, on the contrary, was in rather poor health and was often sick.

This upset young Wilhelm, who wanted to become strong, so as a student he became interested in physical education and anatomy. These items attracted the future founder of bodybuilding and laid the theoretical basis for successful training, which helped Eugene develop a beautiful body and excellent muscles.

His coach was Louis Durlaje, who used a versatile approach to achieve excellent results in the sport. He advocated gradual weight gain.

At the age of eighteen, Frederick decided to move to England. The young man became a circus performer and began performing in the arena.

It was at this time that Müller decided to take a pseudonym, choosing “Eugene Sandow”, since his mother was Russian, and it was Russian strongmen who were in fashion at that time.

He demonstrated a wide variety of strength tricks on stage, and also posed, showing off his beautifully coordinated muscles. Along with performances, the strongman was actively involved in wrestling, quickly gaining the reputation of being invincible. This drew attention to Sandow's personality and his training system.

Moving to America opened up new prospects for Friedrich, who began to participate in advertising sports equipment, promoting a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet.

He creates analogues of sports salons, studios, and gyms. In 1901, Eugene organizes the first competition for athletes. At the competition, the strongmen demonstrated excellent physical shape.

This was the prototype of Mr. Olympia.

Strength indicators

The founder of bodybuilding was able to:

  1. do at least two hundred push-ups in four minutes;
  2. on his arms outstretched in front, he can hold weights weighing 27 kilograms for some time;
  3. competed with an angry wild animal - a lion, on whose face there was a muzzle, and special bags on his paws, and the strong man threw him aside when he rushed at him;
  4. held in his hands a weight weighing 22 kilograms, when several people were sitting on him at the same time, and he held on to the support with his heels and on the chairs with the back of his head;
  5. lifting a barbell weighing 122 kilograms in 1984, the ends of which are full spheres with a person in each, setting a world record;
  6. In 1895, Evgeniy lifted a barbell weighing 115 kg with one hand, and also did a bench press, after which he transferred the projectile to the other hand, performed a squat and lay on his back, and then stood up.

Watching the strongman, the audience was delighted, and Sandow, who at that time was rightfully considered the strongest in the world, showed his exercises with great pleasure. Most of the records he set remain unbroken to this day.

Training principles

The strongman adhered to the following principles:

  1. I trained almost all my free time.
  2. He compiled all the physical exercises performed correctly.
  3. He selected a lot of shells taking into account his age and initial physical characteristics.
  4. He performed exercises in front of a mirror, which allowed him to achieve excellent performance technique.
  5. Move in a calm rhythm, with each contraction taking 2 seconds.
  6. Every thirty days of regular training, he added weight to the dumbbells.
  7. I made sure to do static exercises in every lesson, which allow strength indicators to grow quickly.
  8. I never started studying immediately after a meal.
  9. I always took a bath immediately after class with cool water or wrapped myself in a damp towel and then dried myself off.

These nine principles allowed Frederick to achieve excellent results.

Features of Evgeniy Sandov's training system

In his training, Evgeny Sandov adhered to five basic principles:

  1. Mentally concentrate on contracting the muscles. Consciousness should be directed to the working muscle groups, which allows you to control every movement of the body.
  2. Think exclusively about the end result and don’t stop halfway through achieving the goal.
  3. Use your own body weight to the maximum.
  4. Never worry about your physical fitness, since people of any size and level of training can perform the exercises.
  5. Achieving excellent results becomes possible for absolutely any person if he exercises regularly for five years.

Sandow's system really works and it is designed exclusively for straight people. It was created by the “father of bodybuilding” more than a century ago.

It remains relevant today and is very popular among athletes who want to improve their health and gain a beautiful body without the use of anabolic steroids.

Ivan Poddubny and other famous athletes used these principles in their training.
