Old school strongmen

There are still many heroes on Russian soil! And they are not in fairy tales, but here, not far away. They came to Tsarskoye Selo for a holiday, bent nails and fittings, threw weights, and told us about themselves.

Victor Blud, founder of the Old School Strongmen club, says:

— The old-school strongmen’s club was originally created as an ordinary VKontakte group, I did not plan for it to go beyond the Internet. The group was created on February 11, 2011 and was a VKontakte community in which I planned to collect information about strongmen of the past, their photographs, newspaper clippings and posters, training methods and biographies. I myself train using these methods and train different people. You can see the results at my performances.

But over time, it began to go a little beyond the Internet, interested people appeared who were interested in trying our methods on themselves, we began to meet, organize training camps and conduct training. We have several main locations where we conduct training camps. They change depending on the time of year. For complete happiness, we only need our own gym or room in which we could train.

The idea of creating a club belongs to me, I am its founder. Ideas and projects are usually put forward by me and then discussed collectively, with understanding friends.

Our goal is, first of all, the health of young people, a worthy example for children and self-development.

In the future, we plan to open our own gym, where we will train everyone using the methods of old-school strongmen, a store with branded products “SSSH” and much, much more. We plan to give this city a good shake up. And our St. Petersburg is just the beginning!

Victor Blud: — Training and sports have attracted me all my life.
Since childhood, I have been agile, nimble and quite strong. I was involved in different sports, it was karate and athletics, wrestling, parkour, horizontal bars and much more. However, at the age of about 18-19 years old, I realized that my soul lies with iron. My first “acquaintance” with iron was at the age of 18. I bought myself a kettlebell on the Internet, 24 kg, and learned to juggle with it. It didn’t work out right away, of course, but I can’t tell you how delighted I felt when I started getting my first twists. From that moment on, the iron captured me and has not let me go to this day. We have many other guys, followers and like-minded people. The old school strongmen's club is not just a collection of people who love to lift weights; those especially close to us will understand what I mean. We are united not only by hardware, but also by our views on life, we have our own principles.
Fyodor Pushkarev: - Since childhood, I have had a passion for art and music, graduated from the Mukhin Academy, I work as a metal artist, I make exclusive knives and graphics. I started working seriously with iron not so long ago, about a year and a half ago, and I realized that I would be doing this all my life. In February 2012, I met Victor and the company that surrounds me to this day, I quickly became involved in regular sports meetings, then we hardened ourselves every week in the ice hole and fought in the snow. At the same time, I made a thick steel ring based on Victor’s idea, and the secondary school developed its own unique type of power contact sport, “Fighting for the Ring,” which does not lose its relevance to this day. Over the course of this year, a lot has changed in our club, we continue to rapidly “gain momentum”, we have tried out a lot of interesting strength games, such as tug of war over an ice hole, throwing hammers, stones and weights at a distance, the log push from the Highland Games, grappling, rugby in a hard wrestling style, etc. In 2013, Victor and I began actively performing at various festivals, festivities with power shows, constantly improvising and adding new elements to the performance. In our club of old-school strongmen, everyone leads a healthy lifestyle, does not drink alcohol and naturally does not smoke, everyone, in one way or another, develops their strength and personal qualities with an eye on the strongmen of the past with their original training methods. SSS promotes an individual and innovative approach to building strength and a healthy lifestyle. Personally, I plan to continue to develop along the right, healthy course.

Strongman Show Old School Strongman Show is our new project, which was born quite spontaneously. Previously, not a single circus or folk festival was complete without heroes and strength demonstrations. We, first of all, want to prove that the Bogatyrs have not disappeared on Russian soil. Moreover, we will contribute to the emergence of new heroes and inspire them to do so by our example.

We like to perform at folk festivals and festivals dedicated to Slavic and Old Russian holidays. Fairs with handmade goods and people in folk clothes are motivating and pleasing to the eye.

One of these performances took place at the bottom of the city of Pushkin. This was our third official performance and, in our opinion, the most successful. A lot of people gathered and everyone was delighted, especially the small children. They ran up and vying with each other and asked to make them souvenirs - knots of nails and hearts. This is especially nice, young children are our target audience, we hope that seeing a worthy example in childhood, they will want to live up to it in the future.

What we do is not magic tricks or sleight of hand. All our tricks are authentic, at performances people can see this, look at our equipment and try their hand at it. Some of our stunts are very dangerous. At my last performance in Vyborg, I cut my left hand with a nail right down to the tendons. I was lucky and didn’t hit anything vital. However, it immediately became obvious to the audience that what we were doing was far from a joke.

We have an arsenal of basic power tricks for performances, but it is constantly being adjusted and expanded. By looking at people's reactions to performances, we decide which tricks should be kept, which ones should be eliminated, and which ones should be improved.

Here are photos of the main tricks:

1. The first thing I do at my performances is kettlebell juggling.

Kettlebell juggling is an original Russian heroic sport. It looks very spectacular and helps me warm up before other tricks.

2. Sotsky knot made of 200mm or 300mm nails.

Tying knots from nails is entirely an invention of the Strongmen of Old Russia. Tying a knot from 200 mm nails is quite simple; a strong average man, whose hands are no stranger to physical labor, can handle it. A 300 mm nail is another matter. To tie it requires a lot of strength and skill. This is quite dangerous; it was while performing the 300mm knot that I cut my hand. Knots made from nails are an excellent gift for the audience or a prize for winning the competition that we hold at our performances.

3. Heart made of nail 200 mm

This is a more complex trick that requires strong and focused preparation. The heart is a good gift for some beautiful viewer.

4. Tearing reference books and hardcover books.

Not a single performance is complete without this.

5.Girl shwung with one hand

One of my favorite power tricks, for this we usually call some brave girl from the audience. In the future, I plan to lift adult men this way.

6. Girl Pull with Teeth

For this number we also call a brave girl from the audience. This number is very popular with the public; it is quite spectacular.

7.Twirling the frying pan by hand.

We rarely use this number due to the high price of this device.

There are also a number of tricks that we perform impromptu, right at performances, without prior preparation or rehearsal. This adds feeling and motivation to me. There is no way to retreat, and falling flat on your face in front of the public will severely damage your career and self-esteem.

Here are some of them:

1.Tying the reinforcement around my neck.

We first performed this trick in May 2013 at the Yara-Zhivitsa festival. For people it was a real shock and shock. Perhaps this is the most beloved and spectacular trick for the public. I do not recommend doing it without proper training, it is life-threatening.

2.Tying the reinforcement around my assistant’s leg.

This number was first performed at the bottom of the city of Pushkin. People liked it, we plan to develop it better and in different versions.

3.Inflating a heating pad with a girl standing on her chest.

I also performed this trick for the first time at the bottom of the city of Pushkin. This is my second heating pad in my entire life that I have burst. It was quite difficult. There was barely enough air, and my ear almost bled from the pressure. Glad I made it through.

This is not a complete track record. There are more rooms, even more are planned. These are the main ones.

Advice from heroes. How to learn to bend nails with your hands?

For advice, you can contact us or our group (https://vk.com/oldtimestrongman). However, I will say right away that there is one thing: we help and give advice only to those who have completely given up bad habits, such as alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. So, if you have a desire to become a promising hero, write to us.

Incidents during performances and training

I'll tell you about the performances. The first thing that came to my mind after reading this question was how I cut my hand with a 300 mm nail in the Vyborg club. Everything happened quickly and painlessly, which I didn’t even understand. This is my mistake, I took off the wristbands before I started bending, it was a fatal mistake. The rag slipped off one end of the nail, and so did the hand. I plowed my hand with the point. I only felt it when the nails became sticky and hot. When I saw the blood, I thought I had cut myself a little and didn’t stop. However, the further I bent, the more I realized that something was wrong. I raised my hand to the light and saw a bunch of white on it. The blood was flowing very heavily, and I realized that I needed to hurry. I gathered my last strength and tied the ill-fated nail into a knot. After that, I felt that my hand became cold from blood loss. Fortunately, this was the last number in the program. I finished and left the site. They took me to the injury to stitch it up. After this incident, I began to grind off the points of the nails so as not to take any more risks.

A funny incident happened at our performance at Yara Zhivitsa. There I asked my assistant to take the reference book with me so that I could tear it up during the performance. However, I wasn’t smart enough to see what he brought me before the performance. When he handed it to me, I realized that I had made a mistake - it was a thick, glossy reference book, wet to boot. I cursed everything while I puffed with him. I managed it, although not as quickly as I would have liked, but after that I almost couldn’t perform any further, my hands were so swollen that they wanted to burst and my fingers wouldn’t bend. I had to bide my time. The Old School Strongman Club is the only one of its kind in Russia; we are the founders, so to speak. There are people who prefer to practice according to the rules of the iron game of the past, but we are the ones who have put everything together. We plan to promote the club to the public level.

Now we are at the beginning of the journey and are only gaining momentum. I promise people will hear from us again. Strongmen of the old school - Viktor Blud and Fyodor Pushkarev - especially for

"The New Samson" Louis Cyr

Canadian athlete Louis Cyr , nicknamed “New Samson”, is not in vain considered one of the strongest people of all time. The abilities of this amazing man amaze the imagination, and many of the records he set more than a century ago still remain unsurpassed. Even in his youth, he became famous throughout the area for pulling a cart loaded with grain, along with a horse, out of a swamp. And when he was a Montreal policeman, he became a threat to all the surrounding hooligans, after he dragged two criminals to the station, holding them under his arms.

Louis Cyr held on his back a platform with a group of adults weighing more than 2 tons, lifted about 450 kilograms from the ground with one hand, and over 250 kilograms with one finger. At the same time he could hold the reins of up to four hot horses. By the way, he demonstrated this trick in front of the admiring Queen Victoria.

Head down twist[edit | edit code]

Head Down Crunch
GOAL:

Press

DESCRIPTION:

At the beginning of the 20th century, a man who called himself Professor Attila, the inventor of power equipment and the mentor of Evgeniy Sandov, created an unusual power attribute. Two chains with rings at the ends hung from the ceiling. In the rings it was prescribed to hang upside down on the bends of the knees, circus-style. From this position it was necessary to do body lifts. The Spartan exercise never became popular among the security forces of that time due to its excessive complexity. However, kinesiologists call it the most effective for the abdominal muscles. The exercise makes the abs brutally strong in the shortest possible time, and therefore it is still actively practiced by martial artists today. True, instead of chains and rings they use boxing bags.

METHOD:

Do this exercise at the very beginning of your abdominal workout. Then you simply won’t have enough strength for it.

SETS AND REPEATS:

3 x 10

SUPER TIP:

When you can easily handle 10 repetitions in all 3 sets, pick up a weight.

PERFORMANCE:

Some fitness clubs are equipped with vertical benches with upper leg grips. If you have such a simulator in your club, then you are very lucky. It turns out that you will very quickly get six-pack belly fat. If not, you should search the Internet for a useful device - rigid ankle cuffs equipped with hooks. They allow you to hang upside down on any horizontal bar. Enthusiasts do head-down crunches in a Smith machine. To do this, you need to raise the bar to the top position and hang on it.

Bent-over calf raise[edit | edit code]

TARGET:

Caviar

DESCRIPTION:

According to the famous bodybuilding historian Joe Rock, the first mention of this exercise appears in several magazines in 196D. Before the invention of this movement, bodybuilders only pumped their calves while standing. However, this position is dangerous in its own way. When you carry a lot of weight on your shoulders, it objectively overloads your lower back. It is for this reason that doctors categorically prohibit standing calf raises for all athletes who have had the misfortune of injuring their lower back. In the tilted position, the risk of injury is reduced to zero. In addition, the exercise becomes more isolated and therefore targeted. According to kinesiologists, the standing position in any exercise limits the amount of working weight. So only bent over calf raises have a chance to hit your calves really hard.

METHOD:

Start training your calves with this exercise. Use maximum weights. Repeat this movement at the very end of the workout, but in hard pumping mode.

SETS AND REPEATS:

3 x 15-20

SUPER TIP:

Try to rise on your toes as high as possible. This will increase the degree of contraction of the calf muscles.

PERFORMANCE:

Many fitness clubs are equipped with a special machine for bent calf raises. In the tilting position, you need to support the roller with your pelvis and squeeze it upward, rising on your toes. Experience the true strength of your calves!

Donetsk hero Dmitry Khaladzhi

Dmitry Khaladzhi is the continuer of the glorious traditions of the great strongmen of the past. The Donetsk hero already has 63 records, including those included in the Guinness Book. Dmitry became famous throughout the world after he lifted a lump of coal weighing 152 kilograms over his head, and did it with one hand. Thus, he managed to break a record that had stood for several centuries. If you believe the records that have survived to this day, a similar trick was demonstrated in ancient times by the athlete Bibon, who lifted a stone weighing 143 kilograms, but with two hands. At the same time, Dmitry lifts a 40-kilogram load on one little finger, and lifts a projectile weighing more than a ton from the ground and holds it for several seconds.

The signature trick of the Donetsk hero is called “Devil's Forge”. In it, 2 concrete slabs of 700 kilograms each are broken one by one on the strongman’s chest with a sledgehammer. At the same time, Dmitry himself lies with his back on a board studded with nails. By the way, the athlete does something with nails that only a few can replicate: with his bare hands he braids them into a braid, and with his palm he hammers them into a board through an iron sheet. Another famous and deadly trick by Dmitry Khaladzhi involves throwing a 100-kilogram barbell onto an athlete’s neck.

Dmitry’s achievements also inspire respect because as a child he suffered a severe injury, from which he barely managed to recover. Having received a burn on about 35 percent of his body, the boy bravely endured several skin grafting operations and proved that mental strength is no less important than physical strength. The famous strongman performs strength routines in the circus arena, and also works as a lifeguard. His strength is so enormous that he, without the help of any tool, tears out the doors and engines of mangled cars. If anyone doubts that superheroes really exist, then Dmitry Vasilyevich Khaladzhi is living proof to the contrary.

In 2013, Dmitry made his debut as a film actor, playing the role of the famous 20th century strongman Ivan Firtsak in the film “ Ivan the Strength ”. Moreover, the Donetsk hero performed all the stunts on the set live, without doubles or editing.
