Functional characteristics of running shoes, selection criteria

>Choice >How to choose running shoes for a treadmill and are they needed?

Long-term cardio exercise is undoubtedly good for your health. But you need to take into account that when walking and running, the joints receive a huge load, which ultimately can lead to such negative consequences as arthritis. Destroyed joint cartilage often causes increased friction between bones, which leads to pain during movement.

Treadmill shoes

Rice. 1 – Running shoes are essential equipment if you plan to run on the treadmill frequently and for long periods of time.

Many athletes involved in long-distance running try to choose a route that has minimal negative impact on the joints. Asphalt ranks second in hardness after concrete, so the best option is to run through the forest; in extreme cases, a dirt road will do.

The difference between running models and regular models

Running shoes have some design and functional features that set them apart from other types of shoes.

  1. Increased shock absorption, which is provided by special inserts or an additional layer of sole.
  2. Good elasticity. This is especially true for the front part of the product.
  3. Resistance to mechanical abrasion. There are special inserts in the sole of running shoes in areas of maximum load.
  4. Increased rigidity of the heel area, which ensures reliable fixation of the foot.
  5. Air-permeable material.
  6. Lacing is required.

A characteristic feature of good running shoes is that they are lightweight. You need to select such shoes strictly individually.

Which sneakers should you choose for running?

For many, the answer is obvious, but we continue to see people running in sneakers, futsal shoes, tennis and volleyball shoes. Only running shoes are suitable for running!

There will probably be objections about the fact that they used to run in Moscow sneakers and nothing. You can even run in slippers or ankle boots. Let's approach running rationally and take care of our health . We don’t know how everyone used to run in sneakers before, but it definitely didn’t bring any benefit to the joints.

Design Features

Running shoes have 2 parts in their design: upper and lower. Each of them is further divided into several more elements.

Sole Unit (bottom)

The sole design consists of 2 parts: inner and outer. They are produced separately from each other, but at the last stage they are glued together. It is important to understand the features of these components in more detail:

  1. Inner part. It's called Midsole. This fragment is located between the outer part and the insole. Foam is used to make it, which ensures the stability of the shoe and its softness. Most models use polyurethane or ethylene vinyl acetate. However, well-known manufacturers can use their developments.
  2. Outsole. This is the outer sole that comes into contact with the ground. It is made from carbon or blown rubber. In the first case, the material makes the shoes heavier and stiffer. The second option helps improve the flexibility and shock absorption of the product. To improve technical characteristics, both materials are needed in one pair.

It is important to know what Heel Drop (Offset) is. This is a measurement of the thickness of the sole at the heel of the product - the difference between the height of the heel and toe. This parameter is of great importance, as it plays a role when the foot lands on the surface of the base. The higher this number, the more it promotes heel strike.

Running shoes must have stiffening ribs. The lateral one is located inside the sole. It is made of durable ethylene vinyl acetate and serves to control excessive pronation, stability of shoes during movement under vertical load. Of great importance is the plantar frame, which is located between the plantar part and the insole and runs under the arch of the foot. Its role is to ensure the stability of the sneaker against torsion and bending.

Upper (upper part)

It is made of knitwear, mesh, fabric. Natural or artificial leather is not used in running shoes, as it does not provide the necessary functional features of this type of shoe. This part consists of the following elements:

  1. Sock. This is where your toes are located, to make running in sneakers comfortable, you need to choose the right width and height.
  2. Tongue. A separate fragment designed to protect the foot from the pressure of laces.
  3. Top. That part of the shoe that is made of fabric. Includes the toe box and ends where the lacing is.
  4. Heel part. It should fit well on the leg.
  5. Inlay protecting the Achilles tendon.
  6. Ears. They are required to secure the laces. Their number depends on the type of model. There is often an additional eyelet at the back of the shoe, which ensures that the foot fits well in the shoe.
  7. Laces.

Another element of the upper is the insole. It provides additional cushioning and also protects the skin from chafing against the seams.

Shoe lasts

To make the best running shoes, manufacturers use the three most common types of lasts:

  1. Straight. This type is used to create models for athletes with insufficient or excessive pronation. The straight last allows you to control the position of your foot. The support of its arch is more rigid, so the weight of the product is greater.
  2. Curved. These shoes are characterized by softness, but there are no technologies for supporting the feet. This makes it possible to use the sneakers only in competitions. If used during training, the risk of injury increases.
  3. Semi-curved. This is a combination of the two previous types that is used in most models.

Not only athletic performance, but also foot safety depends on the right choice of running shoes.

adidas boost foam. Source: avocats-bougnoux.com

Boost is thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU) foam beads that are sintered together to create a one-piece midsole. The material was developed by BASF in 2009 and immediately attracted the attention of shoe manufacturers. First introduced to Adidas running shoes in 2013, Boost became the leader in energy return during push-off. Unlike conventional EVA, Boost is more resistant to wear, does not lose properties from +40 to -20 degrees, and provides more energy return.

Functional characteristics

To choose good sneakers for asphalt or rough terrain, you need to take into account their characteristics: weight and size, level of cushioning, quality of seams, stiffness. You should also pay attention to the adhesion of the tread to the base, its geometry and height, the presence of ventilation, protection from debris and dirt.

Depreciation

The following types of depreciation can be distinguished by distribution zones:

  • only in the heel and toe;
  • exclusively in the back of the sneaker;
  • all over the sole.

The main task of this function is to compensate for the shock load that occurs during running, as it negatively affects all joints of the body. The minimum level of cushioning is allowed to be used only in cases where the legs are well trained.

Tread

When running outdoors, you need special shoes that have good grip on the surface. It is ensured by the presence of a tread, the height of which varies between 0-1 cm. The following types are distinguished:

  1. Null. Such a protector is not considered an integral part of the product, but is its technological feature.
  2. Short. The height is 0.1-0.3 cm. In such shoes you can run on asphalt and other hard surfaces. In areas where there is dirt, it performs poorly: the athlete can slip and fall.
  3. High (0.4-0.7 cm). These sneakers are best used for running on rough terrain where there is dirt and stones. They provide reliable adhesion to the surface and are also made of a material that is more resistant to wear.

Sneakers with spikes are designed for running on snow and ice. The tread pattern determines how much dirt will clog the sole. This greatly affects the level of adhesion to the base.

Drop

A special feature of running shoes is that the heel is always higher than the toe. This value is usually indicated in its technical specifications. A high rate ensures a smooth transition from heel to toe. If an athlete uses natural running technology or from the toe, then it is better to choose sneakers that have a minimum drop: no more than 0.4 cm. In order not to reduce the shock-absorbing properties, manufacturers make shoes with high soles.

Weight

You can walk, train or compete in running shoes. But here the choice largely depends on the mass of the couple. If the distance is long, then preference is given to heavy shoes. The weight of standard models ranges from 560-800 g (pair). The weight increases in proportion to the size of the products. The weight of competitive pairs of sneakers is 340-560 g. Studded sneakers and products intended for sprinting are no heavier than 500 g.

Toe and heel stiffness

This parameter is determined by the purpose of the shoe. Marathon shoes (competitive running shoes) have virtually no toe rigidity, so it is better not to touch any obstacles with this part of the product. Most models have an average indicator. Road shoes do not need this characteristic at all.

As for heel stiffness, it is important for those athletes who train on rough terrain. In this case, the back of the sneaker should be securely fixed on the foot. She is also required to protect the Achilles tendon. Products used for trail running have a less rigid heel section.

Torsional and lateral stiffness

The first parameter is the torsional rigidity of the shoe sole. The smaller it is, the more a person feels relief changes, small pebbles that come across on the way. If the product is twisted too well, the athlete may suffer injury, sprain, or rupture of tendons. Such models should not be used by poorly trained people. The higher this indicator, the better, since in this case the runner’s safety and leg stability are ensured.

Lateral stiffness is the degree to which a shoe flexes at the sole. The smaller it is, the higher the pushing ability of the ankle. Some models with increased performance have special stabilization and propulsion systems, which reduce the load, but this is not always the case.

Foot girth and fixation

It is determined by the features of the cut of the upper part in combination with lacing. The foot should be well fixed. But you don’t need to squeeze it too hard, as blood circulation is disrupted. The skin will chafe and air exchange will deteriorate.

Lacing

One of the most important elements designed to securely fix shoes on the foot. There are several types of lacing. The main ones include the following: classic (softer and easier to loosen), with regular knots, high-speed (here it’s enough just to tighten it, which is especially important in winter).

Ventilation

When choosing the best running shoes, you need to pay attention to those models that provide good air exchange. The main function of ventilation is to remove excess heat from inside the shoes so that your feet do not sweat. It only works well if you also use special running socks. Shoes with a membrane are less ventilated, so you need to choose products with additional ventilation inserts. They are usually present on the sides, but are sometimes found on the plantar part.

Dirt protection and heat protection

Models with a membrane are well protected from dirt, water and snow. They also have enhanced thermal and wind protection. Textile products do not have such advantages, but they dry faster and are better ventilated. Some models have additional protective membranes at the top.

Other important properties

When choosing running shoes for heavy runners, you need to consider the width of the last. There should be enough room in the front to allow you to move your fingers. The strength and durability of shoes depends on the quality and type of seams, as well as the type of connection of all parts. Damage to sneakers most often occurs in places of anatomical folds.

Speed

Have you chosen where you will train? Now we need to understand how. All running shoes can be divided into “slow” and “fast”. The first group is sneakers with good cushioning and stabilization of the foot, usually with a voluminous sole. Such shoes reduce stress on the joints and forgive errors in technique. It's the choice for beginners, heavy runners, and those who train daily or do long runs.

The group of “fast” sneakers includes the so-called “marathons” and “half marathons” - models for speed competitions and special training. These shoes are very lightweight, everything in them is minimized in order to allow the runner to reach maximum speed. The sneakers are very light, without much cushioning, without foot support, and have a small drop (the difference in the sole from heel to toe). Suitable only for trained athletes.

How to choose running shoes

Classification

To select the right running shoes, you need to consider their types. Products can be classified according to the following parameters: the type of surface on which the athlete will train, the type of pronation, running technique, and intended purpose. The choice of shoes also depends on whether men's or women's sneakers are needed.

Special purpose

Selecting sneakers requires a competent approach. It is necessary to understand what they will be used for. There are 2 main groups here:

  1. Trainers. Training sneakers for constant jogging on dry ground or asphalt. They provide support and safety for the foot and are designed for long distances.
  2. Competitive. They are as light as possible and are not equipped with leg stabilization technologies. Such products place the greatest load on the supporting apparatus. They are designed for short, fast runs in competitions.

Minimalistic sneakers are also made, which are better for trained athletes to run in, as the foot moves naturally in them.

Competitive

Trainers

Coverage type

To choose the right running shoes, you need to decide where exactly you will be training. According to this parameter, shoes can be divided into the following groups:

  1. Highway. These are products with maximum shock absorption, so that it is possible to absorb the shock load when landing on the foot. Their upper part is softer.
  2. Trail. The sneakers are designed for running on rough terrain. They are equipped with a tread on the sole that improves grip on the ground. The upper part of the product is made of more durable material, and in places of maximum load there are additional inserts. The back here is more rigid.
  3. For use in the hall. For example, for shuttle running. These sneakers have a durable sole that should not slip or spring.
  4. For the treadmill. Here you should give preference to the best running shoes for running on asphalt. They must have good shock absorption.

Properly chosen sports shoes will help avoid foot injuries.

Seasonality

Summer products are made from lightweight materials. Silicone or foam is used for the sole. Mesh is used for the upper, which allows the legs to “breathe”. A pair of these sneakers has minimal weight. You can wear them not only on the street, but also in the gym.

For winter time, sports shoes made of denser materials with additional insulation are required. A membrane is often used for the upper, and the weight of a pair is up to 800 g. The sole is made of polystyrene and is thicker. A winter option is studded sneakers, in which you can run on icy roads without the risk of falling.

In demi-season models you can train in autumn and spring. They are protected from moisture. In these sneakers they train in the rain and run in the dew. The products contain the necessary ventilation inserts.

Pronation type

Pronation in running shoes is the part of your foot movement that helps distribute the force of impact on the ground. There are these types:

View Shoe selection
NeutralThe load on the foot is distributed evenly, and it can fall inward by no more than 15%. In this case, any soft shoes are suitable.
OverpronationIt is an excessive roll of the foot inward or flattening. The longitudinal arch decreases. The ligaments are constantly under tension, and the shock-absorbing properties of the limb are reduced. In this case, additional insoles must be inserted into the sneakers, and they themselves must stabilize the foot. Maximum medial support is needed.
UnderpronationInsufficient arch of the foot. The collapse of the leg occurs on the outer part. This requires neutral running shoes with enhanced cushioning, which promotes proper load redistribution.

You can determine what kind of pronation an athlete has by consulting an orthopedist.

Running technique

When choosing running shoes, it is important to take into account exactly how a person runs and what sports he prefers. There are only three techniques:

  1. Classic. It is characterized by heel support. In this case, the entire musculoskeletal system becomes tense. To reduce the level of stress, you need to choose sneakers with a heel that is thicker than the front half.
  2. Natural. The main load falls on the middle part of the foot. You will need sports shoes in which the sole has a uniform thickness and the treads are in the middle part.
  3. Sprint. The support is on the toe. In this case, you need special sneakers with shock absorption in the front part.

For competitions and training, it is better to purchase different pairs of shoes.

Gender of the athlete

To choose the best running shoes, an important parameter is the gender of the person. Women's models have the following features:

  • narrower block;
  • extra heel height;
  • softer shock absorption due to lower body weight.

Competition running shoes have the same properties for women and men.

Women's

Men's

III. Weather

In general, there is no strict division of running shoes by season.
The only true criterion for selecting shoes for a specific season and weather conditions is comfort and safety of training. Ideally, have several pairs of running shoes for running in any weather. — Dry, hot weather

Sneakers must have good breathability so that your feet can “breathe” and not overheat.

— Variable weather with light precipitation

Consider sneakers with thicker lining in the toe box. Such models easily allow feet to remain dry when running in drizzling rain, along paths with small puddles.

— Rain, snow, slush

If inclement weather can't keep you from going for a run, choose shoes with water-repellent treatments or waterproof materials. If previously only off-road models were equipped with such technologies, now it is easy to find waterproof sneakers for running on flat surfaces, for example with a Gore-Tex membrane.

How to choose the right size

It is better to purchase a product that is 1-1.5 sizes larger than shoes that are used for walking every day. This way you can protect your fingers from injuries and calluses. The width of the last varies, so the product must be measured laced and unlaced.

This procedure should be carried out at the end of the day, when the foot is slightly flattened and increased in volume. The upper part of the shoe should fit your foot tightly without causing any discomfort. Sneakers that are too large will result in the athlete being unable to run: they will fall off the feet.

How to buy and when to change running shoes

Don't think that only those who run 80 km a week need suitable shoes. Even if you run occasionally, you can still get injured due to the wrong running shoes or too much wear. In this regard, we provide several recommendations on which running shoes to buy for running:

  • When you stand, there should be a distance the size of your thumbnail between your longest toe and the tip of your shoe. This means you'll need to buy running shoes one or half a size larger than you usually wear, as your feet tend to swell during exercise.
  • Feel free to jog around the store or on a nearby sidewalk to get a proper feel for the shoe and the feel it gives you. Also ask the seller about the possibility of returning your purchase if you are not satisfied.
  • As a rule, sneakers need to be changed every 300-500 kilometers. This distance will vary from person to person, but these are general guidelines to guide you when changing shoes. You can also write down the date you purchased the sneakers. In addition, when the shoes begin to wear out, pain may occur (in the knees, hips, etc.). This also indicates that it is time to replace it.

Taking the time to choose the perfect running shoes will help prevent injury and make your workout more comfortable. Your body will only thank you!

Selection criteria and common mistakes

To choose the right professional sneakers, you need to consider the following criteria:

  • compliance in size and degree of depreciation;
  • place of running and purpose of using shoes;
  • setting and other anatomical features of the foot;
  • good level of flexibility of the sole in its forefoot;
  • use of “breathable” materials when sewing;
  • placement of lacing in the center of the product;
  • the presence of a removable insole.

Not every lover of a healthy lifestyle can choose the right running shoes. The most common mistakes:

  • weak fixation of the heel, as a result of which it “walks”;
  • resting the finger on the toe (leads to injury, chafing);
  • excessively tight fixation;
  • use of socks not intended for running;
  • lack of ventilation in shoes;
  • bad fitting of sneakers.

Failure to follow these selection rules can result in injury or problems with the skin of your legs.

Features of running shoes

Running shoes have a number of differences from other types of sports shoes. This applies not only to the cut, but also to the properties of the materials used:

1. The upper is soft and flexible, with a minimum number of seams. Often has mesh inserts made of nylon or polyester threads.

2. Heel counter with rigid reinforcement for secure heel support and a cutout that reduces pressure on the Achilles tendon.

3. Coverage - a kind of “collar” for the ankle. Soft and dense, it holds the foot well and prevents chafing.

4. The midsole “dissipates” point impact loads, performing the functions of a kind of armored belt.

5. The sole itself with the obligatory thickening at the heel and a raised toe. Made from soft and elastic, but durable materials that provide good adhesion to the surface.

Other elements of the sneakers (tongue, lacing) are not fundamentally different. Like the insole, although it can be removable, non-removable, or even have a “memory effect”.

The best manufacturers and models

To choose the best running shoes, it doesn’t hurt to consider the manufacturers of sports shoes and their characteristics. The following well-known brands can be distinguished: Adidas, Asics, Nike, Mizuno and others.

Asics

A Japanese company that produces a variety of sports shoes. The advantage is the use of “breathable” materials, the light weight of the pair, and an affordable price (from 3,500 rubles). All products contain a gel-like substance in the sole that improves shock absorption. Shoes are used for short and long distance running. When choosing, you need to be careful with the size.

Mizuno

A Japanese brand that is characterized by careful consideration of the anatomy of shoes, as well as the production of sneakers for various purposes. In addition to increased shock absorption, such products have a special clip in the back that secures the heel. The sneakers are characterized by good ventilation and increased service life. There is a choice of shoes for feet with different types of pronation and flat feet. The cost of a pair starts from 3,500 rubles, but may be overpriced.

Adidas

A German manufacturer, which in most models uses innovative foam that provides high-quality shock absorption. The products are distinguished by increased strength, good fixation of the foot, low weight, and comfortable lacing. The line of sports shoes includes special high-speed models. They can also be used in winter or rainy weather. There are separate models of sneakers for running on asphalt. The cost of a pair is 3400-20000 rubles. Disadvantage: The sole may slip a little at the heel.

Nike

An American manufacturer that produces not only functional, but also visually attractive shoes. The upper part is made of a special lightweight fabric that provides good air exchange. There are no multi-layer adhesive pads. The advantage is the single seamless design of the product, thanks to which the fit of the leg is as comfortable as possible. The cost of a pair is from 4500 rubles. But most models have thin soles, so they should not be used by athletes with large body mass.

Salomon

A French company characterized by the high reliability of its shoes, wear resistance, and comfort. The models of this company are ergonomic, have protection against dirt, so they can be used in any natural conditions. The sneakers are light in weight and fit well on the foot. But their cost is quite high, about 7,500 rubles per pair.

Hoka

French sports shoes with excellent shock absorption, so they can be used for long distance running. It is characterized by a thick sole, while the weight does not increase. This company produces products for various purposes.

Depending on the purpose of the models, we can present the following rating of the best sneakers:

Name (type) Characteristic
Adidas Energy Boost ESM (long distance running)They have a high rise, bend well in the sole, and have a durable heel that provides reliable fixation of the heel. The foot practically does not feel the unevenness of the base. But they are expensive, and the soles are difficult to clean.
Asics Gel-DS Treiner 20NC (for everyday training)The sneakers are lightweight, well ventilated, and prevent microtrauma. The foot is securely fixed. The models also have a beautiful appearance. The disadvantage is reduced flexibility and high cost. Also the shoes are not designed for long distances
Mizuno Wave Paradox 2 (running shoe model for flat feet)Well suited for use with different types of pronation. But they can only be used in good weather.

The choice of running shoes also depends on whether a person is a professional runner or just wants to keep fit.

Asics for running

ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 22

The ASICS Gel Nimbus 22 is an everyday training shoe designed for all distances, including long distances. It is aimed at runners with neutral or underpronation who are looking for quality shoes for their training. Over long distances you will feel most comfortable.

ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 21 vs. 22

The Nimbus 22 achieves this by combining AHAR and Blown Rubber outsole materials (traction and durability) with midsole materials: GEL®, Flytefoam and Flytefoam Propel (long-lasting cushioning and responsiveness) and Jacquard mesh (precise fit, lightweight and breathable).

The platform height difference is 10mm in the men's version and 13mm in the women's version. The approximate weight of the model is 310g for men and 255g for women. An excellent option for those who like to run at a more relaxed pace, leaving tempo work/competitions for more suitable options (marathons).

  • Weight: 310g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow pace

ASICS GEL-QUANTUM 180 4 and ASICS GEL-QUANTUM 360 5

Although the ASICS Gel-Quantum 180 and Gel-Quantum 360 have different specifications, they are generally similar, so we'll cover the two ASICS maximum cushioning models in one paragraph. In both cases, the dominance of GEL® in the midsole comes first. This is why these models are better suited for average to heavy runners.

In the case of the 360, GEL® runs along the entire perimeter of the midsole. In contrast, the 180 model has a smaller proportion and can be said to be wrapped in gel in half. Either way, you'll get maximum damping thanks to the Flytefoam base surrounded by GEL.

Asics running shoes: choosing the best models of 2020

Also, in both cases, the mesh has no seams, and its breathability creates a comfortable environment for the feet. In the heel area, engineers have modified the previous versions' plastic clip to provide greater ankle stability. The outsole is made of AHAR material, which guarantees proper grip and very good durability.

The ASICS Gel-Quantum 180 4 and ASICS Gel-Quantum 360 5 are not designed for fast paced competition or marathons, but they do provide maximum cushioning, especially for those who need it or who carry a lot of weight.

  • Weight: 337g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow/medium pace

ASICS GEL-CUMULUS 22

The ASICS Gel Cumulus 22 is a great everyday training shoe suitable for neutral or underpronating runners. Good for runners of all weights, but especially average ones. For those who are very heavy, it is worth taking a closer look at the ASICS Gel Nimbus. The Cumulus 22 can be used for all types of training activities, although the model will perform best over long distances. It can also be used for competition if you want, although if the pace is faster than 4:10 - 4:20 min/km you may want to consider using a shoe with a more flexible profile, such as the ASICS RoadHawk or ASICS Dynaflyte.

Asics for running

Asics Gel-Pulse 11

GEL-Pulse 11 are comfortable men's Asics running shoes designed for daily jogging over short and medium distances. Designed for traversal on hard surfaces for neutral runners. The 11th edition receives structural improvements to improve cushioning and wearing comfort.

Taking a look at the 2019 Asics sneaker collection

The breathable mesh upper effectively wicks moisture and excess heat away. It has special molded structural reinforcements to improve stability and fit to the foot. This effect is supported by the lacing system along with a plastic cup-shaped clamp that securely locks the foot in place. Inside, a comfortable OrthoLite insole acts as the first shock-absorbing layer. The midsole in version 11 was made using AmpliFoam technology. This foam provides soft, optimal cushioning to keep you comfortable during your daily runs. You can see a gel fragment under the heel. This gel pad absorbs landing energy and then uses it to enhance the bounce.

For information: this is what the Asics Pulse 12 model, which will appear in the fall, looks like

All this is mounted on a durable outsole made of porous, adhesive rubber. Provides excellent grip on hard surfaces and asphalt. Specially placed grooves provide flexibility and harmonize with the natural movement of the foot.

  • Weight: 320g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow pace

Asics Gel Excite 7

The Excite 7 is the entry-level Asics gel road running shoe for runners on a budget. However, even at its low price, the Excite 7 is an effective and comfortable Asics running shoe. They feature a classic midsole with a 10mm drop.

The Gel Excite 7 uses AHAR+ on its outsole. AHAR+ rubber easily withstands impact and abrasion thanks to its durability similar to car tires. AmpliFoam technology is a soft, low-density damping material. This gives the seventh version of Gel Excite a flexible, adaptable and user-friendly platform.

The gel located at the back absorbs shock and distributes it across the platform. The engeneered mesh upper provides the perfect balance between protection and breathability. The material keeps the foot dry for a long time. On the other hand, the upper is supported by a set of molded reinforcements. They guarantee the integrity of the structure and reliable fixation of the foot. Additionally, the shoe has a reasonable weight: 273g for the men's model and 250g for the women's version. The only disadvantage of this model is the lack of free space around the fingers, which may be unpleasant for some athletes. In summary, the Asics Gel Excite 7 is a very affordable travel shoe that is well worth the money spent.

  • Weight: 273g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow/medium pace

Asics Gel-Contend 6

The Gel Contend 6 is Asics' entry-level asphalt running shoe with a classic configuration. Thus, under the heel there is a thick sole of 22 mm with a drop of 10 mm. We also appreciate the more than reasonable weight of the shoe with this design: 290g for the men's version and 230g for the women's version.

Asics Gel-Contend 6: review and comparison with Contend 5

The affordable price deprives this model of the Japanese brand's flagship technology, but there is a GEL block on the heel to absorb shock when landing on the heel. In addition, AmpliFoam provides comfortable and moderate cushioning. The upper is simple and not overly detailed, but is effective: it offers support for the foot and is comfortable. As you can see, the Asics Gel Contend 6 running shoes are an excellent choice in terms of price and quality. Ideal for male and female athletes who want to practice their running without breaking the bank!

  • Weight: 290g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow pace

The top of Jolt 2 is made of lightweight and breathable mesh, which is responsible for ventilation processes. It is flexible, making it easy to adapt to the foot. The upper's construction is supported by synthetic side panels, and the heel is reinforced with a plastic cup to maintain stability. The insole and midsole are made using EVA technology. This is a lightweight damping foam that still provides elasticity. Another feature that deserves attention is the rubber outsole with increased abrasion resistance.

Asics Nimbus Lite

Lightweight version (50g) of the Nimbus 22 training model

Asics Nimbus Lite: new horizons

Asics Glideride

The Asics Glideride is a shoe designed for running on hard, flat surfaces. It is created in the image and likeness of the most advanced Metaride model, but is a more affordable version. Suitable for any runner, regardless of fitness level. Unlike the Metaride, the Glideride has less extreme curve, lighter weight, more drop and a softer midsole.

These Asics running shoes feature a curved outsole with a rigid guide plate. According to a study conducted by Progressive Sports Ltd at Loughborough University, UK (July 2020), this special design reduces energy loss at the ankle by 16% (compared to 19.1% in the MetaRide). Minimizes ankle movement while the shoe's center of mass is closer to the heel, making it easier to roll your foot. The model performs well during long-distance runs.

The Glideride midsole is based on lightweight organic fiber Flytefoam and a more flexible version of Flytefoam Propel. An additional gel unit at the rear provides cushioning during the loading phase.

The high-quality mesh knit upper provides excellent fit and breathability. The external lock securely holds the heel inside the shoe.

  • Weight: 280g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at medium pace

Asics for running

Asics Nova Blast

This model attracts attention thanks to a completely new design and foam called flytefoam blast. The new foam is extremely soft and bounces energetically.

The unique curvature of the platform acts like a trampoline during your run, so you feel a slight softness underfoot, but with maximum bounce and energy return. So here we have a really fast sneaker for a brisk running pace with an attractive design.

If this is a tempo shoe, can it be used for daily running? We think yes, for some of the runners who are used to training at a high pace, the NovaBlast can certainly become an everyday training shoe. Well, for the average runner, this model will be an excellent choice for tempo training or competitions up to the marathon.

  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a medium/fast pace

Asics Evoride

The new Evoride model is an addition to the Asics Ride series, which includes the well-proven Metaride and Glideride models. The Evoride is a lightweight version for $120 with the same really efficient platform geometry.

This design allows the runner to roll across the surface more efficiently and smoothly. Underfoot there is shock-absorbing flyte foam propel foam with full contact with the ground. The midsection provides reinforcements in key areas of wear and necessary support.

The upper is an engineered mesh with a really soft lining and an overall just perfect fit. So we have a really promising new product. This is an effective lightweight trainer for any type of training activity with an approximate weight of 257g in the men's version.

  • Weight: 257g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at medium pace

ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27

The ASICS Gel-Kayano 27 is an updated version of one of the Japanese brand's most important lines. This is an everyday training shoe with an increased level of stability. The model is suitable for all types of runners and especially those with heavy weights. If you have severe overpronation, you can always consider using another ASICS model such as the GT-4000, which is specifically designed for those who are heavy and overpronate.

Since the Kayano 27 is a very comfortable running shoe from Asics, it is suitable not only for training, but also for those who are looking for a shoe for completing a marathon at a relaxed pace.

Comparison of Asics GT-2000 8 with Kayano 26 and GT-1000 8

The weight of the model has decreased by several grams compared to the previous version. The height difference of the platform differs depending on the floor. So in the men's version it is 10 mm, and in the women's version it is 13 mm.

In the previous version, we highlighted that the model received a dual-layer Flytefoam™ Lyte and Flytefoam™ Propel midsole. The new version retains the same materials, but reconfigures them to improve flexibility on your run.

  • Weight: 310g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow pace

ASICS GT-2000 8

The eighth version of the ASICS GT-2000 remains true to its philosophy of providing a good level of protection and stability like the Gel Kayano, but less stability than the GT-4000.

The lightness and responsiveness of the GT2000 8 will especially appeal to mid- to light-weight runners. To do this, they use a FlyteFoam midsole, to which is added a Dynamic Duomax™ unit, which is a firmer foam that does most of the work of stabilizing the foot. Not only does the heel include a GEL pod (and the FlyteFoam is slightly softer in that area), but the forefoot also has one.

The sole is divided into two large blocks. The area under the metatarsals has excellent grip and flex thanks to the large transverse grooves. To enhance heel-to-toe transition, the horseshoe-shaped heel is attached to the forefoot with a Trusstic plastic insert.

The outsole material is AHAR+, highly abrasion resistant thanks to the addition of carbon. These asics running shoes are a good choice for low to moderate weight runners for both training and competition.

  • Weight: 300g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow/medium pace

ASICS GT-4000

The ASICS GT-4000 is an everyday training shoe with features that make it ideal for heavy to very heavy runners (+85kg and +70kg) or those who need a shoe with a high level of stability. In addition to training tasks, they can also be used in long competitive races such as half marathons and marathons (but at a low running pace).

The GT-4000 provides maximum protection primarily due to the stability and damping of the platform, as well as the use of first-class materials that make them very comfortable.

It cannot be said that this is an analogue of “Kayano” (ASICS Gel-Kayano), since the GT-4000 goes much further in terms of correcting pronation and weight of the runner. The platform is designed for people with flat feet or wide feet, given the large internal space. Durability is another positive aspect, as the correct configuration of the support pads prevents premature wear and tear, which is common in shoes designed for overweight people. The shoes were designed for a relaxed, restorative running rhythm.

  • Weight: 320g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow pace

Asics GT-1000 9

Running model for hard asphalt surfaces and medium-distance trails. The Asics GT-1000 9 is lightweight and dynamic, thanks to a new lightweight design. In this version, the mesh in the top layers has been redesigned. A new fabric with a reduced number of seams is used, which is aimed at accelerating the ventilation process and faster evaporation of moisture from its surface.

The inside of the shoe is covered with soft fabric that does not cause chafing. A removable Ortholite footbed absorbs odors and acts as the first layer of plush softness underfoot. Another feature is the reinforced heel that holds the foot in place and stabilizes it. These Asics gel running shoes, in addition to classic EVA foam, use lightweight and resilient FlyteFoam Lyte foam in the midsole to enhance running dynamics. There's a visible gel pad under the heel that absorbs shock and distributes it throughout the sole, so your landing is less noticeable and smoother for you.

This running shoe is suitable for people with overpronation thanks to the DuoMax system located on the inside of the midsole. This is high-density foam that the foot can trample inside.

The updated outsole provides full-length contact with the ground and a smooth heel-to-toe transition, resulting in a more efficient run. Part of the outsole is made of Ahar rubber with increased abrasion resistance when running on asphalt.

  • Weight: 290g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow/medium pace

Asics Gel-Exalt 5

A running model for people with overpronation, with an average weight of up to 90 kg, guaranteeing adequate support. Works at short and medium distances, at distances up to 21 kilometers.

They are suitable for running on hard asphalt surfaces. The model is quite versatile, so you can use it for gym classes, Nordic walking or for everyday walks. The fifth edition of the model differs from its predecessors with a new upper that is even lighter and better ventilated.

Reinforcements around the toes and sides increase the shoe's durability and extend its life. The specially profiled heel stabilizes and holds your foot in place so it doesn't move while you run. The Ortholite inner sockliner is molded to fit your foot's anatomy and can be removed and replaced.

The midsole is made of soft and flexible Speva foam, and the DuoMax unit, which is a high-density foam, reduces overpronation or inward roll of the foot.

In addition, the Trusstic shank prevents the foot from twisting and ensures a smooth heel-to-toe transition. The successful design is complemented by an Ahar rubber outsole with increased abrasion resistance.

  • Weight: 260g
  • Surface: asphalt, flat, compacted soil
  • Purpose: training run at a slow/medium pace

Useful tips

To make using sneakers comfortable and running safe, you need to use the following recommendations:

  1. Wear special socks for running, as they promote good ventilation.
  2. Be careful when purchasing shoes without examining and trying them on to avoid counterfeiting or making a mistake with the size.
  3. Shoes should be changed after traveling 600-1200 km, even if the sneakers seem suitable in appearance.
  4. Products are washed once a month.

Running shoes are high-tech shoes that need to be chosen taking into account many factors. The wrong pair can cause serious harm.

Do not buy without inspection and fitting

Professional sports shoes for competitions

Professional shoes for competitions are usually divided into marathon and half marathon shoes.

Photo 2

Marathons are suitable only for professionals and only for competitions.

The main requirement for shoes is minimal weight. It dictates the main features of the sneakers:

  • lack of depreciation;
  • lack of rigid fixation of the leg;
  • maximum flexibility of the sole.

The athlete must have an ideal movement technique and not place emphasis on the heel when planting the foot: this will create a huge impact load, therefore, when running long distances, the weight of the marathon runner should not exceed 60 kg . And for athletes weighing heavier than 85 kilograms, the use of such models is completely contraindicated . Poor foot support and flat soles of running shoes can have a negative impact on any deviations from normal pronation and supination.

When participating in marathons, flexible and lightweight models of marathon shoes are suitable. Without instep support and reinforcing inserts in the toes of shoes.

Half marathons are not designed to compete over half the distance. According to their characteristics, they occupy something between marathon and regular cross-country running shoes.

Shoe Features:

  • have a thicker sole;
  • it is possible to use shock-absorbing inserts or technological solutions;
  • foot support and a raised heel are used

Photo 3

Photo 1. Lightweight women's half marathon sneakers Asics Gel Noosa Tri 10 with a unique bright design.

Despite the fact that half marathons are almost as hard to run, there is a slight damping of movement, so they are suitable for athletes of any weight and do not exclude the running technique with a heel emphasis. You can even run in them on asphalt surfaces.

Half marathon models, despite the name, are better suited for long marathon distance races.
