Make yourself a 90s super hero. Van Damme splits and Arnold's biceps

Schwarzenegger's height: Schwarzenegger's height is 188 cm. Arnold Schwarzenegger's height is a subject of frequent debate - some say he is shorter and some say he is taller. Moreover, in the latest photographs with Russian President Medvedev, Arnold’s height was visually 170 centimeters. However, this is nothing more than an illusion of photography. If you look at official sources - Arnold's encyclopedia, Arnold's interviews and many others, you can find out that Schwarzenneger's height was always about 188 centimeters (with an error of 2 centimeters throughout his life). Schwarzenegger's weight: Arnold Schwarzenegger's maximum weight in competition form was 107 kg, and in the off-season - 115 kg. Of course, these numbers changed throughout life, and it would be stupid to talk about an exact gram-to-gram correspondence. It happened that Arnold, during the period of rest from training, weighed less than 90 kilograms. But at the peak of his bodybuilding career, Schwarzenneger’s weight was always over 105 kilograms. Schwarzenegger's biceps: Arnold Schwarzenegger's biceps The size of Schwarzenegger's biceps was 54-57 centimeters, depending on the form and time of the athlete's performance. There are still disputes that the volume of Arnold Schwarzenegger's biceps is not 55 centimeters, but less than 49. These rumors were started by Arthur Jones, who claimed that when he measured Arnold Schwarzenegger's biceps, he received exactly these results. However, given the athlete's height, this is very unlikely. Then again, Jones may have measured Schwarzenegger's biceps while the bodybuilder was resting from training. Schwarzenneger's chest: Schwarzenneger's chest Arnold's chest volume was 135-145 centimeters. It is this part of Arnold’s body that is the reference and most developed. The two huge plates on Arnold's chest are still references. Schwarzenegger's strength indicators: Schwarzenegger press: Arnold performed the bench press with a maximum weight of 220 kg at one time. But basically, he used multi-repetition and multi-approach techniques in his training, and pressed in a clean style, with maximum concentration on the chest. For such a technique, Schwarzenegger’s bench press of 220 kg is truly admirable. Deadlift: Deadlift by Arnold Schwarzenegger The maximum deadlift that Arnold performed was 330 kg per repetition. He achieved this result at the powerlifting championship while still very young - he was only 19 years old. This is a fairly high result, even today. Later, Arnold was not so keen on conquering new weights, but paid more attention to the harmonious development of the body. Therefore, I no longer set records in the deadlift. Squats: Arnold used a rather unique technique for squats, which is now rarely used. He placed a block under his heels and squatted very deeply, with a large amplitude. Using this technique, he reached a working weight of 240 kg for 8 repetitions. Other exercises: There are many rumors about Arnold, like any other great personality, including both about the athlete’s incredible strength and weakness. Which bodybuilder doesn’t know the expression of envious people: “all the muscles are puffy and there is no strength in them.” However, it is reliably known about Arnold’s fairly high strength indicators in many other exercises - such as flyes, donkey lifts (an exercise for the calf muscles, which Arnold performed with a weight of more than 300 kg, and the weights were performed by 2-3 athletes sitting on Arnold’s back) .

43-year-old Terry Crews (in the film - Hale Caesar) is a former National Football League player. His sports career ended 15 years ago, giving way to a vibrant film career. But according to Terry, all these years he did not slow down and continued to train as if he had a World Cup ahead of him:

Randy remembers his years in the ring with some pleasure, but in his opinion, professional athletes push themselves too hard, not giving their bodies time to rest. The same applies to protein-protein diets: the star of “The Expendables” suggests not getting hung up on them and eating as varied as possible.

His personal trainer Gunnar Peterson spoke about the training regime of the creator of The Expendables and The Expendables 2, 65-year-old Sylvester Stallone. How many hours a week do you think Sly spends on the gym? Fifteen? Twenty? But they didn’t guess: maximum seven. How does he manage to remain such a strong man?

Thanks to hard work and a wise attitude towards his body, Stallone, at 65, will give a head start to younger “jocks”. Here's how he prepared for the filming of the action movie "Bullet in the Head" (Russian theatrical title - "Unstoppable"), which is scheduled to premiere in 2013:

Source - selfdiscipline.com 51-year-old Jean-Claude Van Damme did not participate in the first "The Expendables", but, to the delight of fans, agreed to play in the second film. The role of the main villain is a big responsibility, and the Belgian actor, a former famous karateka and kickboxer, took his task very seriously.

Source - JCVD online “Brussels muscle” is an example of how you can turn your body into a real work of art without having outstanding natural abilities. The main thing is to listen carefully to yourself and not get carried away by any one type of training to the detriment of all others. And then age will not be scary.

Another Van Damme workout: variety is key. Source - JCVD online “The Expendables” and “The Expendables 2” are not only dynamic, exciting action films with your favorite actors, but also a source of inspiration for those who dream of doing the impossible. The strength and dexterity of the charming “veterans” of the genre, who effortlessly perform the most difficult tricks, prove that absolutely anything is possible—you just have to really want it. It is possible that the wild success of the first film about the Expendables was connected with this. And on August 16, the second one will be released.

Training by Jean-Claude van Damme

The best exercises for hands

Let's start with the biceps and then move on to the triceps and forearms.

The best biceps exercises in the gym

As with most muscles, there are many biceps exercises you can choose from. But in reality, only a few are enough [3].

Standing barbell curl

The barbell curl has been the gold standard in bodybuilding for over a century, and for good reason—it's one of the best exercises for the biceps.

Standing biceps curl with EZ bar

From time to time, you should switch to a curved bar variation to give your wrists and elbows a break from the tension caused by the previous exercise.

Alternating dumbbell curls

Like the barbell curl, this is a time-tested exercise that helps build bigger biceps.

Hammer exercise

This exercise with dumbbells is especially useful for pumping up the brachialis (the smaller muscle that gives the biceps visual impetus).

Reverse grip pull-ups

The reverse grip pull-up is a great “functional” movement that gives a good workout to the biceps.

The best triceps exercises in the gym

As with the biceps, there are a lot of triceps exercises. But there are a few really worthwhile ones that will help pump up this muscle.

Close grip bench press

If I were told to choose only one triceps exercise, I would most likely choose the close grip bench press.

This is a complex, multi-joint movement that allows you to safely press heavy weights while also slightly accelerating chest development.

Important: when performing a bench press with a narrow grip, the grip should be slightly narrower than shoulder width , but not closer to the central axis of the body. You may see guys grab the barbell with a grip width of only about 10-20 cm. This is a bad idea because it puts undue stress on their shoulders and wrists.

Overhead dumbbell extensions

This is one of my favorite triceps exercises because it allows you to safely press heavy weights and give the muscle a good workout.

Arm extensions with a barbell lying down

This exercise is also called the “French press.” It is a movement similar to a dumbbell press and is great for developing the triceps.

Extension of arms on a block

This is the most common triceps exercise done in the gym, and surprisingly, it works great.

However, it is better to do it after more strenuous exercise. Also, I like the V-shaped and straight handles better than the rope.

Push-ups (from a bench and on parallel bars)

Reverse push-ups and dips are exercises that are good for the triceps and also good for the chest and shoulders.

The correct technique for doing push-ups is shown here:

And here are the dips (with an emphasis on the triceps):

Forearm workout

People often ask me how I train my forearms - and are surprised to learn that I don't do any special exercises. The result was achieved thanks to hard training of the back, chest and arms.

I'm not a fan of direct forearm training for the following reasons:

  • It can lead to pain and stiffness in your elbows, which will interfere with your triceps workout.
  • It is simply not needed if you are doing heavy exercises for your back, chest and arms.

However, you can train your forearms , for example, to improve your grip strength for pull-ups or to beat your friends in arm wrestling. Follow along, later we will tell you how to properly pump this muscle group.

arm training for girls

Progressive overload is the key to muscle growth

It is important not just to do the exercises monotonously, it is important to increase the load . If you don't get stronger, you won't get bigger.

But if you try to increase your strength in these exercises and eat enough food for muscle growth, the results will not be long in coming.

Movie star, martial artist and one-time bodybuilder Jean-Claude Van Damme was born in 1960 in Belgium. Every teenager of the 90s knew Van Damme by sight and tried to adopt all his movements in the movies. More than one guy got his legs bleeding trying to repeat the famous scene from “Bloodsport”, when Jean-Claude fells a small tree with a kick after several days of training on the same tree. Van Damme truly represents a legendary man who went through thick and thin and copper pipes.

His future was laid at the moment when his father brought him to the karate section. Van Damme was 11 years old at that time, he was a thin, gloomy teenager, who, on top of that, was often beaten by his classmates for doing ballroom dancing. Jean-Claude became interested in karate as only a true fanatic can do. He spent hours studying in the gym and his teacher, seeing the rich potential of his ward, contributed in every possible way to his development. He developed in Jean-Claude not only fighting technique, but also muscles.” Strength, first of all, comes from muscles” - teacher Claude Goetz repeated these words to his student more than once, and Van Damme learned this lesson perfectly.

In addition to combat training, Jean devoted a lot of time to developing his muscles. As a rule, after an hour and a half jog and karate classes, he worked out the same amount in the gym. The result was excellent physical shape, which Jean acquired in a couple of years.

Seeing his son's significant success in sports and his athletic appearance, his father insisted that Van Damme take part in a bodybuilding tournament. In 1978, Jean took third place at the European Junior Bodybuilding Championships. At the same time, he received a black belt in karate and became a real martial arts master. And next year he receives the title of absolute champion of Belgium in bodybuilding. After that, no one doubted that the guy had a great future.

However, Jean-Claude himself imagined his future life connected with a more profitable business than sports. In general, he has always been a very calculating person and, it is worth saying, this helped him a lot. For example, his first marriage at the age of 18 to a wealthy 25-year-old native of Brussels brought him his own gym, which he sold when he left to conquer Hollywood, and his second wife, already in America, provided him with the patronage of her father, a wealthy industrialist. Van Damme shamelessly used the funds of his wives, as it was necessary to build his future.

After several months of wandering, one-time jobs, and numerous film auditions, he was finally cast in the lead role in the film “Bloodsport.” This was the start of his incredibly successful career. It so happened that almost every role of Van Damme was an example of courage and strength, and Jean-Claude had to constantly keep himself in shape. In many ways, the bodybuilder skills he acquired in his youth helped here: special training programs, sports diets and proper nutrition.

In the late nineties, inspired by success and fame, Jean-Claude began to gradually lose ground and became a hostage to drink and drugs. Constant noisy parties, a gradual transition to heavier drugs, a lot of alcohol and, as a result, Van Damme ended up in a clinic where he underwent treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. After leaving the clinic, Jean-Claude promised himself that he would never reach such a state again, and he still keeps this word.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is now married to former successful bodybuilder Gladys Portugues. It is worth saying that Van Damme was never particularly faithful and changed 5 wives, and twice it was Gladys. It was in her that he found everything he needed: care, affection and love. The couple has two children and they are not going to separate, although reasons for this arise from time to time. For example, the recent scandal of 2010, the essence of which was that Jean was breaking up with his wife because of a Ukrainian 23-year-old model. Of course, he has grounds, but according to Van Damme, he is definitely not going to get a divorce.

On the contrary, in September 2011, a joint book by Jean-Claude Van Damme and Gladys Portugues entitled “Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding” was published, on which the couple has been working for 3 years.

Arnold press - technique with photo

Initial position. Sit on a chair with a high back and move close to it (if you have a machine, tilt its back at an angle of 80-85 degrees for comfort). Place your feet on the floor at right angles. Take dumbbells in your hands and lift them to neck level.

The forearms are parallel and vertical to the floor. The wrists are turned with the inside facing you. Start inhaling and raising your arms up. When the dumbbells rise to the same level as the top of your head, rotate your hands in the movement so that their inner part “looks” forward. (When performing bench or standing presses, the pivot point will be the middle of the range of motion.)

Seated Arnold press technique

After completing your inhalation, hold your breath for a couple of seconds at the peak of the height. Tighten your muscles. Start exhaling while lowering your arms, maintaining muscle tension. As you approach the pivot point, begin swinging your arms again. Having completed the exhalation in the starting position, immediately go back to repeating.

Secrets from the professionals

Experienced performers advise using the rule - “It is better to underdo it than to overdo it.” For example, we set the back of the exercise machine not exactly at 90 degrees, but slightly lower. The elbows in the starting position are not directed strictly to the floor, but slightly pushed forward.

We extend our arms at the elbows not to their full amplitude, “inserting” the elbow, but a little less. When returning our hands, we slightly do not bring them to their original position. This way the muscles will be constantly tense during work, as if you were on a machine with elastic bands. This results in better results and less risk of injury.

Common mistakes:

  • unsuitable weight;
  • jerky movements;
  • no delay in breathing;
  • separation of the back from the support.

Doing the exercises incorrectly will not give the desired results and can lead to injury. For example, too little weight is unlikely to make your shoulders strong and broad, while too much weight will put unwanted stress on your joints.

Sudden movements with dumbbells can cause sprains and even rupture of ligaments. Leaning your back away from the support or standing press with an unreasonably large weight will lead to dangerous stress on the spine.

Contraindications to performing the Arnold press are existing problems with the shoulders, hands, elbows and spinal injuries.

I advise everyone to watch the movie JKVD. A completely different Van Damme, who said everything about himself. You won't regret a minute. Many critics, after watching the film, said that he played no less than an Oscar. By the way, his pen there, at 47 years old, is the kind you don’t often see on a good amateur in BB.

Contents of the article: Jean Claude Van Damme is well known to many of our compatriots from the action films of the nineties. Then he was the idol of many teenagers who wanted to be like him. Surely he continues to remain so for some people even now. In this article, you will learn about how Jean-Claude Van Damme trained and get acquainted with the biography of the actor.

Biography of Jean Claude Van Damme

The actor was born in 1960 in Belgium. Van Damme's future life was largely predetermined at the moment when he and his dad came to the karate section, and the guy then turned eleven. At that time, he would have been thin and danced, for which he often suffered humiliation from his classmates. Van Damme became passionate about martial arts, becoming a fan of karate.

He trained for hours and his mentor, seeing the potential in the boy, tried to help him develop. Moreover, this concerned not only the fighting technique itself, but also the muscles. The coach constantly told his ward that strength comes from muscles and Jean Claude remembered these words for the rest of his life.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's usual training consisted of an hour and a half of running, mastering fighting skills, and after that the future star spent about the same amount of time in the gym, improving his muscles. As a result, within a couple of years, Jean Claude acquired excellent physical shape.

Dad saw in his son not only the potential of a karateka, but also a bodybuilder. It is at his insistence that Jean Claude participates in the national bodybuilding championship. This happened in 1978. Then Wham Damm became a bronze medalist at the European Junior Bodybuilding Championship. At that time, he already had a black belt in karate and could safely consider himself a master of hand-to-hand combat.

A year later, he wins the absolute category at the national bodybuilding championship and no one doubts his future. But Van Damme himself saw himself not in sports, but in business. It must be admitted that he was very calculating, and this helped him in the future. Let's say, the first marriage was most likely concluded by convenience and as a result he got his own hall. The guy was 18 then. By the way, when he moved to the USA, he sold this hall. Already living in the United States, Jean Claude remarried, and his father-in-law turned out to be a rich man, providing his son-in-law with his patronage. He used his wives to create his future and did not regret it.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's active training made his figure attractive, and his skill in hand-to-hand combat could be in demand in cinema. Actually, this is precisely why he moved to Hollywood. Success did not come immediately, and he wandered around the city for quite a long time and did minor work, while simultaneously attending screen tests.

As a result, he was chosen to participate in his first film, Bloodsport. This is where his success in cinema began. In fact, his first role was successful, bringing him fame. All his future roles showed the strength and masculinity of the actor, and for this reason, Jean-Claude Van Damme's training was very intense. He simply could not lose his excellent physical condition, otherwise his film career would have ended.

Here the skills that he acquired during bodybuilding in his homeland were very useful to him. Unfortunately, success played a cruel joke on Van Damme. Being at the pinnacle of success, the actor became addicted to alcohol and drugs. This fact could not but affect his health, and he ends up in the hospital. After undergoing treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, Van Damme promises himself that this will not happen again. We admit that he keeps his word today.

Personal life was no less active than the training of Jean-Claude Van Damme. He was married five times, twice to Gladys Portugues, who was a very successful bodybuilder. It seems that now, in the person of his wife, he has found what he was looking for all his life, namely care and love. They have two children and their marriage looks quite happy. Although sometimes scandals happen, Van Damme claims that he will never separate from his wife.

Make yourself a 90s super hero. Van Damme splits and Arnold's biceps

All-brand techniques of action heroes in the Sovsport.ru guide

Van Damme's splits, Arnold's biceps, Dolph Lundgren's platform hairstyle. Sovsport.ru figured out how to create an ideal action hero.

VAN DAMME'S SPLIT
How it happened:
Van Damme did the splits in his first notable film. It was the 1986 film “No Retreat and No Surrender,” where the Belgian played the Russian villain-kickboxer Ivan Krashinsky. Krashinsky’s signature move was to sit in the splits on the ropes of the ring between rounds.

Then Van Damme did the splits in every one of his films. He did the splits on two chairs in Bloodsport (1988). He was stretched into the splits, suspended from ropes (Kickboxer, 1989). Finally, he sat on the splits, wearing aerobics tights (Double Impact, 1991).

Van Damme's splits became one of the most vivid impressions of visitors to Russian video salons. In the early 90s, martial arts schools literally experienced an invasion of students who wanted “splits like Van Damme’s.”

Read on Sovsport.ru - how to do the splits in a year at home

Like now:

The 55-year-old actor still monetizes his legendary skills today. He continues to do the splits in TV shows and commercials. The Volvo ad, where Van Damme does the splits while standing on two moving trucks, was watched by almost 85 million people. There is another video, the authors of which claim that Van Damme’s legs were secured with special ropes to the car mirrors: the actor could not fall and fall, even if he wanted to.

ARNOLD'S BICEPS

As it was:

Arnold Schwarzenegger's biceps at its peak, in his own words, measured 56 centimeters in girth (in a tense state). Schwarzenegger wrote in his biography: his muscles looked too impressive for filming a movie, so he had to dry off and lose weight. But even then, Schwarzenegger's biceps stunned the imagination of moviegoers.

The 80s were marked by big muscles, so the creators of action films tried in every possible way to emphasize Schwartz’s monstrous muscles. At every opportunity, his hero tore off his clothes and strained himself. The dream of having an arm of 50 centimeters or more still haunts gym regulars. Ask any trainer in the gym and he will say: biceps (often forgetting about everything else), everyone pumps.

Like now:

Arnold is 69 years old. He continues to stay in shape and his biceps look great for his age. But, alas, these are no longer the same hands that made the eyes of Soviet schoolchildren light up

DOLPH LUNDGREN'S PLATFORM HAIRSTYLE

As it was:

The 195-cm Swede Lundgren played Russian boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985). It was difficult to find a better actor for this role: this is roughly how the Americans imagined the “red car,” and Drago confirmed their worst fears.

A striking feature of Ivan Drago was his platform hairstyle. For this hairstyle, singer Grace Jones previously fell in love with Lundgren, who settled the young Swedish actor in her home. And later Soviet viewers admired the “platform”. In almost every school class there were boys with Lundgren haircuts. The hairstyle was also in fashion among the “racketeers” of criminal gangs. She perfectly complemented leather jackets, gold chains and crimson jackets with padded shoulders (which is why she became strongly associated with people who were physically strong, but narrow-minded).

Like now:

Lundgren, 58, long ago swapped his platform for a more neutral hairstyle. He was a former captain of the Swedish karate team and remains in good athletic shape. In 2011, Lundgren in Russia had a 5-round fight according to boxing rules with Oleg Taktarov, an actor and world champion in mixed martial arts. Taktarov won, but Lundgren looked very worthy in that battle.

CHUCK NORRIS SPINNER KICK

As it was:

That's how Chuck did it - he kicked with a roundhouse so that his opponents flew off like tennis balls. In his own words, Norris began to study karate and judo out of boredom. In 1959, he served at a military base in South Korea: the war had been over for six years, and there was absolutely nothing for conscripts to do, he says. In 1965, Chuck won the karate championship in Los Angeles and became the owner of a network of schools.

For the first time he tried his famous turntable in cinema against Bruce Lee himself (“Way of the Dragon”, 1972). Perhaps this was the only time the turntable did not work - in that fight, according to the script, Lee’s hero won. Over the next half century, Chuck's blow never failed.

Like now:

Chuck is 76 years old. He opposes same-sex marriage and supports the desire of the state of Texas to gain independence from the United States. He starred in a Russian commercial for non-alcoholic beer. Despite his advanced years, the “spinner”, which became a symbol of karate in the Soviet Union, is still with it today.

SYLVESTER STALLONE'S ALCOHOLIC MIKE

As it was:

What will highlight muscles better than a regular sleeveless T-shirt? Italian actor Sylvester Stallone realized this back in the early 80s - and since then he has constantly used this trick. Rambo wore a tank top. Rocky wore a T-shirt. Even the arm wrestler guy from the movie "Got It Hard" played by Stallone wore a T-shirt. And after them, having seen enough of the action heroes, all the regulars of video salons in the Soviet Union began to wear the alcoholic T-shirt.

The T-shirt has become a symbol of masculinity. You could just wear a T-shirt - that’s what the athletes did. You could wear a T-shirt (with a chain) under a jacket - and then you were an athlete and a mysterious creative person at the same time. Van Damme wore a T-shirt with wide pants and Cossack boots with a leather jacket (and this was the pinnacle of 80s street style). One condition: always, under any circumstances, the T-shirt had to be tucked into the pants.

What now:

Stallone, 70, still wears tank tops and looks good in them. The tank top returned to our lives after 20 years of oblivion and became one of the key fetishes of the “hipster” subculture - along with a beard and stupid short shorts.

How was Jean-Claude Van Damme's training?

Van Damme trains six times during the week.
The training on Monday, Tuesday and Friday involved working on the muscles of the back, thighs, chest and abs. On the remaining days of the week (Sunday was a day off), in the morning Jean-Claude worked on his lower legs, abs and shoulder muscles. As you may have noticed, Van Damme actively works on his abdominal muscles, and his favorite exercises for training this group are crunches (reverse and vertical) and side turns. In terms of nutrition, Van Damme never used strict dietary programs. Although in preparation for filming he had to sacrifice something. For example, while working on the film “The Monk,” Jean Claude did not eat meat. According to him, he had to be as fast as possible, and had to eat only fruit. We also note that the actor considers oatmeal to be the best product for bodybuilders.

#2 Incline Bench Press

This type of press puts emphasis on the upper pecs, which are not as well developed in most athletes. This is why Arnold liked to include the exercise in his training program, while many others did not include it in their training program as often.

Again, pay attention to the position of your hands - it is wide , just like in bench presses.

By the way, about the tilt. Don’t forget - it should be 30-35 degrees, and no more, otherwise the chest workout will turn into a shoulder workout.
